Note to NAACP: I am not calling Barack Obama Big Brown. Do not send Al Sharpton after me. Please read on…
Barack Obama won the presidential election because he was like Big Brown. Let’s take a look at how they compare:
- Many people supported both simply because they wanted to become a part of history. Triple Crown for Big Brown. First black President for Obama. I even heard people I know say they were truly upset with themselves for not voting because they “wanted to be a part of history”. In supporting them for this reason, people can use this reasoning if and when they fail.
- Many people thought both were sure things. Big Brown had won his first five starts handily and was a 3-10 favorite for the Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown victory. Obama spoke eloquently (on prompter, of course), is youthful, supposedly attractive, intelligent, etc. People thought since he spoke so well, he would just solve the world’s problems with words. They also thought electing a black man would show the world that the US is progressive and many problems, including Muslim extremists, would go away. Absurd but true.
- Both Big Brown and Obama had little experience. Big Brown was a three year old that had only run a handful of races and hadn’t run on many different tracks. Obama did have 7 years experience as an IL state senator (note: he couldn’t mention any accomplishments during his campaign), but only 3 years as a Washington Senator, placing him on the lower end of prerequisites by historical standards. He also had no foreign policy experience.
We all know what happened to Big Brown - choke job in Belmont.
Let’s hope Obama fares better. Although the chances are usually never good for Messianic figures. Horse or man.
