Shock Battle - Mark Foley (R) vs. Mel Reynolds (D)

In order to illustrate the absurdity, corruption, and overall slime-factor of BOTH major parties, we’re going to present battles between individual politicians.

In today’s Shock Battle, we pit up Mark Foley (R) versus Mel Reynolds (D). Which one is the bigger shocker?

Mel Reynolds (Democrat)

In August 1994, he was indicted for sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer that began during the 1992 campaign. Despite the charges, he continued his campaign and was re-elected that November. On August 22, 1995 he was convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. He resigned his seat on October 1 of that year. In April 1997 he was convicted on 15 unrelated counts of bank fraud and lying to SEC investigators. (source: wikipedia)

In one tape, Reynolds asks Heard to describe sex with her lesbian lover, then asks if he can join Heard in bed with “Theresa,” a fictitious 15-year-old Catholic-school girl, whom Heard invented apparently to tempt Reynolds. At one point he begs her to provide lewd photos of the girl. “Jesus,” Reynolds says on the tapes, “a Catholic. [...] Did I win the Lotto?” (source: nndb.com)

Mark Foley (Republican)

Foley had inappropriate instant messages and conversations with young Congressional pages and was the hot scandal prior to the 06 elections, where the Democrats picked up big seats.

Details later revealed in the media included an instant messaging transcript of the 52-year-old Congressman asking a 16-year-old boy to describe his genitals, and a 2003 transcript of Foley and an underage boy having sex on-line, with Foley and the boy describing their orgasms. (source: nndb.com)

On October 19, 2006, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune stated that a Catholic priest named Anthony Mercieca told the newspaper about an intimate two-year relationship he had with Foley when the congressman was a teenage altar boy living in Lake Worth, Florida. (source: wikipedia)

In this battle, I would have to say that Reynolds is the shocker and therefore the “winner”. Foley was indeed molested as a boy, he resigned immediately, and ironically, he championed numerous bills protecting children from predators (although you could argue this makes him the bigger shocker). Reynolds on the other hand, continued his political career after the allegations surfaced, and then continued his slime path with some solid bank fraud.

Who’s the bigger shocker?
