A report from MarketWatch states that state budgets are set to drop in 2009 for the first time since 1983.
For all these government people talking like it is necessarily a bad thing - cry me a river! It is about time.
Since 1983, the American people have experienced several recessions. During those tight economic times, hardworking taxpayers cut back on their spending and do everything they can to keep their families afloat.
Yet it has taken 25 years for the state governments to exercise similar responsibility as its people. And you know that they didn’t cut budgets willingly! They only did it because they were forced to!
When times get tough, the government can simply raise taxes. Yet the people cannot raise their incomes in the same fashion.
The amount of money the government spends is not in direct proportion to what the people get back anyway. Declining budgets is a good thing! But when the economy gets back on its feet, we must not allow them to resume their spree.
